Wal-mart

Actually, I am not familiar with Wal-mart because I have never been there before. I just know that Wal-mart is well known for having big chains and cheap prices of goods. I didn't know that there is a conflict between Wal-mart company and its employees.

As a business major, this kind of problem related to labor and management is always difficult. Basically, I think good company has a good policy for employess. That policy is not just about high wages. It means that company should respect their employees and build trust with its employees. In case of Wal-mart, low prices for consumers and low wages for employees can be a trade-off but the attitude of wal-mart toward its employees need to be changed. If they cannot raise wages for employees, they should explain why they can't afford it or why they do not want it. Then, they can persuade and negotiate with the employees. I think appropriate response to the requirement of workers is important, even though Wal-mart has a lot of replaceable workers. Instead of low wages for employees, providing other welfare system can also be a good alternative method.

I thought black friday is a cultural events. I will be there because I want to experience and also get a stuff with cheaper prices.

The American Dream

Many people came to the United States chasing the American dream. The American dream had an important role for immigrants because it meant that they could live better life in new environment. America was the land of opportunity for them because everyone can be successful if they work hard. So, many people from other countries came to the America with expectation and they are the first generation of American dream. They worked hard with the belief of achieving the American dream. With the first generation’s sacrifice, their next generation can make a success in their life and we can see the successful cases of the American dreams. Still these days, the American dream exists. However, the real meaning of it has been faded. The economic reality of the United States makes the American dream hard to achieve. Also, corporations and government use just the symbolism of the American dream to force people into submission.

Class and Education.

I worked at a stock company as an intern during the last winter vacation. It was the first experience of my social life. Mostly, my role was to assist other workers. I helped not only the simple work like receiving customers, issuing a card, scanning, copying, but also the computer works like making powerpoint or excel.

I have been treated well in there. I was the youngest so all workers kindly taught me how to behave well and work efficiently. They provided meals, a heater, and other useful things for me. Also, sometimes they took me to their office dinners and gave me good advises for my future. In a familial atmosphere, I could adapt relatively fast to new environment.

My education level mattered for this work. So before I get this work, I was interviewed at my school because my university made a contract with the company to offer internships. Interviewers wanted to know about my level of computer skills, related experiences, and some certificates. Actually, in my thinking, it doesn't really necessary, because the work I did is very simple and anyone can do easily, except using computers. However, sometimes my education level was very helpful for working.

I agree that the level of education a worker has should determine the respect and pay that worker receives to some extent. The work that requires a high level of education is not for anyone because it is based on certain knowledge and specialized skills from the educational courses.  Also, I think the level of education means their effort. People who have a high level of education also try to invest their time, money, and effort for getting it. Therefore, it is natural that we compensate for their effort by expressing respect or much more paying. Of course, the level of education is not the only one determinant of the respect and paying that worker receives. However, the level of education is also important.
